ADD YOUR WORD
ADD YOUR WORD
$15.00 – $50.00
PARTICIPATION OPTIONS:
#1 Add your word
Add your word or feel free to add more than one. Please note that multiple words from the same order will not form any single portrait. For example, if you choose to purchase 7 words, these words would not form the entire word inspiration for Portrait #1, but rather be distributed on Portrait #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6 and #7.
Multiple word purchases will be capped at 52, which means no individual can have more than 1 word for a single portrait. This keeps the game fun and random.
#2 Add your word plus 365wordgirl print bundle.
Add your word plus receive your favourite 8×12 matted print of any 365wordgirl self-portraits (past or future). This is a pre-order and your choice will be confirmed via email.
HOW IT WORKS:
- You purchase a word or a few words. Please add your word the order notes during checkout.
- You can add any REAL word you like
- I must be able to find a definition.
- It can be in any language.
- If I have my doubts I will email you and you will need to choose a more suitable word.
Single-word purchases will form the basis of self-portraits in the order that I receive them.
Example: 7 individuals purchase 7 single words to form the inspiration and basis for Week #1
Multiple word purchases will form the word combinations for separate portraits.
Example: If you choose to purchase 7 words, these words would not form the entire word inspiration for Portrait #1, but rather be distributed on Portrait #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6 and #7.
Multiple word purchases will be capped at 52, which means no individual can have more than 1 word for a single portrait. This keeps the game fun and random.
A self-portrait photographic project with a twist.
Since its inception in 2010, 365wordgirl invited visitors to enter random words to her blog thus forming the basis of a series of self-portraits. 365wordgirl sought to investigate and explore the ‘self’ in the context of random internet connections and the social networking phenomenon.
Each portrait uses 7 words in the order entered; i.e. Week 1 = words 1-7, Week 2 = words 8-14 and so on. With 52 weeks in total. 365wordgirl is a journey of self-discovery via the words of random people from all corners of the globe.
In this project, Melissa investigates and explores the ‘self’ in the context of random internet connections and the social networking phenomenon.
Embarking on a journey of self-discovery and riding on the words that are randomly fed via the internet, she endeavours to challenge the ways in which we perceive our self-image and the ways in which we can become empowered.
The process is just as important as the finished project. This project and the body of work it encompasses seeks to investigate causality, random connections, global social networking, arm’s length photography and new modes of self-portraiture.

Fast forward to 2020 and the world is in lockdown battling a pandemic. Social distancing measures mean that I can’t operate my photography business for now, but I’m determined to thrive as an artist. We need art more than ever right now because this is how we express our feelings, desires, observations, inner worlds, new inventions, innovations, criticisms, sadnesses and joys. In order to come out of this stronger as a collective, we must keep the art alive. My gift to the world is my creativity. I’ve been creative my entire life, it is not only how I make a living, but how I breathe. I’m relaunching 365wordgirl in an effort to connect people with art.
