Sequined Kaftans and Memphis Mae

My recent collaboration with Memphis Mae was an experiment for both of us, it was inspired by an era that we are both not usually working with. Yves Saint Laurent was responsible for making the Kaftan a popular fashion silhouette in the 60’s and the late 60’s through to the 70’s saw it become known as the Hostess dress. Elizabeth Taylor made it iconic, she even got married in a one when she tied the knot for the second time to Richard Burton. Memphis channeled both her eccentric grandmother and aunt for the original concept and the costume was designed and made by Georgia Moon.

I love the result and look forward to future collaborations with this foxy minx!

Sequins and sexiness,

New moon, new moniker.

It’s been an idea that I have wrestled with for the good part of this year and I have finally decided to take the plunge and align my namesake with the direction my work is heading. Basically I’ve outgrown my current moniker, it’s time to expand and grow and what better time to do it than during the New Moon.

I’ve also been holding onto several projects I don’t have the energy and time for. I need to be selective and aware of creative overwhelm. I also need to let go of the fear that new ideas won’t come to me. Much like a hoarder needs to let go of personal possessions that no longer serve them, I to, need to shed some layers, simplify my creative outlets and align my talents with prosperity and abundance. I feel my work is getting better every day and feel it would be unfair to limit myself in such a superficial way. Miss Mookie has became that limitation.

A pseudonym that started as a DJ name (the word my son used for music when he was 3 years old) eventually evolved into my pin-up persona. I’m not at all ashamed of this journey, in fact it has shaped who I am, given me  strength, courage and an amazing perspective for creativity, but the past is the past and I’m all about growth and moving forward. I’ve accomplished a hell of a lot during this time – I’m proud of that, but I want to remain fresh and ever current.
I’ll be changing everything over gradually and by 2016 my creative work will all fall under Melissa Katherine. Stay tuned!

When Kitty met Mookie

Check out this fabulous video the ever so talented Kitty Von Tastique put together. It was filmed at a recent Raw Artists event that I exhibited at.That night was the first time we met in person after interacting for a while via social media. The whole thing came together pretty well considering it was totally on the fly and the editing pulls the whole thing together perfectly. There’s also a little appearance by Eden L’amour, who was featured in many of my photos on the night and assisted me in setting up. I’m surrounded by awesome babes! I just love this little piece and admire Kitty’s dedication to her passion for style, fashion and the importance of being a conscious consumer.

This is what happened when Kitty met Mookie.

So what’s it all about?

‘Kitty’s Kitschy Days Out’ is a brand new TV show, which showcases the most fun and fabulous eco-fashion, design and vintage based events all over Australia! Kitty and her team have already been given the green light by free-to-air channel, TVS, right here in Sydney and it looks like the first episodes will be aired either this month or next. Exciting!
Six episodes have already been filmed and these have been self funded. Kitty will  use the money raised via her crowdfunding campaign to pay for flights, accomodation and fuel for the Kitty mobile, enabling her to scope the entire nation and bring us an insight into all things vintage, handcrafted and eco-fashion.
